The underside carries an impressed cooperative mark along with the number 16, indicating the size in centimetres.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLikely dating somewhere between the 1940s and 1970s, it has all the character of the utilitarian kitchenware produced there during that period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe contrast between the inside and outside is fantastic. The exterior is finished in a deep near black glaze that has developed a fine spiderweb craquelure over time, while the inside reveals the warm orange red glazing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis terracotta pot has clearly lived in a real kitchen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKnown in Italy as a pignatta (slow cooking bean or stew pot), pieces like this were built for long simmered meals and everyday cooking. Beans on the stove all morning, a small ragù warming gently in the background, something simple and good cooking slowly while the kitchen filled with the smell of garlic and tomatoes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt still works beautifully for that today, but it also looks right at home sitting on the counter loaded with onions straight from the field or some sun-kissed tomatoes.
