This one carries the maker's mark of Henry, breveté S.G.D.G., Paris, stamped clearly around the pewter collar. The hand blown glass body sits inside a woven iron wire jacket, and it is topped by a swing lever tap that ends in a cast dragon head. Late 19th to early turn of the century, circa 1890 to 1910.

The wire mesh was not for looks. It held the pressurized glass together in case the bottle burst after a hard shake, which is why so few survive intact. This antique soda siphon shows the single bulb teardrop shape, less commonly seen than the double gourd version. The pewter fittings have aged to a soft grey, the tap lever still swings, and the glass beneath the mesh is clear and heavy in the hand.

Stand this vintage French siphon on a bar cart in a sitting room and it does the talking for you. It reads as Belle Époque Paris, the age of cafés and cocktails, without a single word of explanation needed. The dragon head tap and the rusted wire jacket carry a whole period on their own. You do not find this one often.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0938/4686/4215/files/antique-french-seltzer-siphon-henry-paris-2.jpg?v=1787043770
https://theprovencecollection.com/products/antique-french-seltzer-siphon-wire-mesh-glass-henry-paris-circa-1900
