A wrought iron handle is attached to the cauldron by two brass escutcheon plates. The proportions and craftsmanship set this copper pot at some point in the late 18th to early 19th century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe shape tells you what this chaudron was for. Tall and narrow rather than wide and shallow, it hung over a hearth fire to heat water. Boiling water was an everyday job in a French country kitchen, for washing, food preparation and laundry. A small copper pot like this was the workhorse that did it.
