Morning coffee feels a little more ceremonial when it comes from a pot like this. This antique French Limoges coffee pot has that beautiful, traditional white porcelain coffee pot shape. When you add in the hinged lid, it immediately makes the breakfast table feel more satisfying.
This cafetière, or coffee pot, was made by Frugier in Limoges in the early 20th century. The base is marked Aluminite Frugier Limoges France Déposé. René Frugier founded his Limoges factory in 1895 after training at Sèvres. Most people don't know that Aluminite was developed as a heat-resistant porcelain made for kitchen and table use. It's truly a remarkable material.
The shape is really beautiful with a long swan-neck spout that gives the whole piece a graceful line. The lid is attached to the handle with a small hinge, so it lifts neatly without being set down separately. It is a small practical detail that was common with hotelware of the time. It means that the lid doesn't get misplaced or broken.
Today, it would be beautiful on a breakfast table, displayed on a shelf or placed in a corner with a set of aluminite cups and saucers at the ready. Pair with some linen napkins, silver spoons and a stack of well-loved books... and it brings a quiet French café feeling into the room.
