Antique French Gargoulette | Glazed Terracotta Water Jug, 19th Century
USA & Canada: Everything is covered in the price. Fully insured express courier shipping (FedEx or DHL), customs duties and import fees. Nothing added at checkout.
Carefully packed by hand in Provence and tracked door to door, typically arriving within 5 to 10 business days.
This antique French gargoulette has the kind of surface that makes old southern pottery feel alive. The bare terracotta body, glossy chestnut glaze around the neck and soft running drips give it a wonderful field-and-farmhouse feeling... as if it has come straight from a long working day in the South of France.
A gargoulette is a porous terracotta water jug, traditionally used in rural French life before modern refrigeration. The lower body was left unglazed so evaporation could help keep the water cooler, while the glazed neck and shoulder made the piece easier to handle and pour.
The applied clay loops at the shoulder would have allowed the jug to be tied or hung when not in use. Today, it would be beautiful inside or out... but particularly spectacular with other antique French pottery. This piece is rustic, sculptural and full of Provençal character.
