This antique French brass candlestick has that simple, steady beauty that makes old candlesticks so easy to love. It is not overly ornate and that is part of the charm. The tall baluster stem, rounded socket and circular base feel balanced and useful. It was made for the ordinary evening ritual of placing a candle on the table, the mantel or beside the bed.
Known in France as a bougeoir, this candlestick likely dates from the mid to late 19th century. The brass has aged into a warm golden-brown patina, with darker oxidation settled into the grooves and base. There are small areas of verdigris and surface wear from age and use, which give the piece that wonderful old brass character.
What I like about this one is how easily it fits into daily life. It would look beautiful with a simple cream taper beside old books, on a farmhouse table or on a bedside table. Because it is a single rather than a pair, it can be easily added to a group of other antique brass candlesticks.
It carries the feeling of a French household object that was made to be used again and again. The warm brass and simple shape make it feel like it has already seen many good evenings.
