The fire marks are what make this antique French cooking pot feel so good and look great in the kitchen. The pale terracotta exterior is darkened from years near the hearth, while the honey-brown glazed interior brings that warm kitchen glow old southern French pottery does so well.
This pot à cuire, or cooking pot, likely dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. It has a wide low form, two hand-pulled lug handles and an unglazed exterior. It's the kind of pot that would have been used almost every day in a southern French kitchen.
The rim shows small chips and glaze wear, while the underside carries soot and wire-cut marks from the potter’s wheel. Today, I would enjoy it decoratively with lemons, limes, folded antique linens or dried herbs. It has the quiet beauty of a real hearth piece that earned every bit of its patina.
