Vintage Italian Cooking Pot | Albisola Glazed Earthenware | Coop. Stov. Mark
This vintage Italian cooking pot came out of Albisola in Liguria, the little Mediterranean pottery town known for turning out honest everyday ceramics for generations. The underside carries an impressed cooperative mark along with the number 16, indicating the size in centimetres.
Likely dating somewhere between the 1940s and 1970s, it has all the character of the utilitarian kitchenware produced there during that period.
The contrast between the inside and outside is fantastic. The exterior is finished in a deep near black glaze that has developed a fine spiderweb craquelure over time, while the inside reveals the warm orange red glazing.
This terracotta pot has clearly lived in a real kitchen.
Known in Italy as a pignatta (slow cooking bean or stew pot), pieces like this were built for long simmered meals and everyday cooking. Beans on the stove all morning, a small ragù warming gently in the background, something simple and good cooking slowly while the kitchen filled with the smell of garlic and tomatoes.
It still works beautifully for that today, but it also looks right at home sitting on the counter loaded with onions straight from the field or some sun-kissed tomatoes. Even when made in Italy, we can bring a touch of Provence with it.
