This antique French pichet is exactly the kind of faïence pottery that stops you mid aisle at a brocante. The soft cream tin glaze is hand painted with loose floral decoration in cobalt blue, ochre, and copper green, a palette you see across regional French faience from the mid 19th century. No maker’s mark visible, just a really beautiful piece of country pottery.
The form is simple and full of character. Deep wheel throwing rings still show inside, the spout is pinched by hand, and the unglazed terracotta foot was pared at the wheel before firing. The painted flowers and little fern sprigs have that quick confident brushwork that only comes from repetition and experience. It's a wonderful pitcher.
