This pair of antique French copper pots (maybe copper ramekins) are simply amazing with their square shape and rich character. Hand hammered and assembled with brass dovetail seams along the base, these petites marmites likely date from the late 19th to early 20th century, when such construction was still done by hand in regional workshops. No maker's mark is visible.
The shape is what gets you. A rounded square body with a banded waist, a slight bulge at the bottom, and the warm pinkish glow of polished copper running across every surface. Each of these antique copper kitchen pots has two cast brass handles. The dovetailed brass seam runs along the base perimeter of each piece. It's craftsmanship that looks like art. They just do not make them like this anymore.
These little hammered copper containers were made for daily kitchen use. Most likely, individual portions were served in these. Today, they can be used for salt or small condiments to bring a touch of Provence to your table. Otherwise, they shine on a kitchen shelf, hold potted flowers on a dressed table, or sit beside the stove as a quiet piece of France.
