Antique English Silver Plate Milk Jug | Walker & Hall Sheffield | Circa 1900
What I like about this antique Walker & Hall milk jug is that it carries history with it. You can see the spoon marks on the inside where the contents were gently mixed over the last hundred years. It's a detail not found in most silver items, certainly milk pitchers.
Made in Sheffield in the early decades of the 20th century and later finding its way to France, it is the sort of piece that would have spent years moving between breakfast trays, coffee services, and dining tables before eventually settling into a Provençal home. The Walker & Hall pennant mark and pattern number are still present on the underside.
The shape is wonderfully restrained. Straight-sided with a gentle taper, sitting on a stepped foot and finished with a crisp pinched spout that pours beautifully. The handle has a classic S-curve with a small curled detail at the top that gives it just enough character without becoming fussy. Originally silver plated over copper, the underlying copper now peeks through at the rim and foot where generations of polishing gradually wore the silver back. Personally, I think the piece is stronger because of it. The contrast gives the piece warmth and tells the story of how much use this pot actually had.
This is the kind of item that slips easily into daily use. Beside a coffee pot at breakfast, holding cream for dessert, or holding your antique coffee spoons between other old French tableware. The proportions are excellent and the wear is beautiful. It's a small piece with a surprising amount of character.
