Known in French as a cage d’appelant, this small decoy bird cage likely dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. The wooden frame is fitted with hand-bent iron wire bars, a hinged end door, a central partition, a wooden perch, a small feeding tray and its original glazed terracotta water cup suspended inside.
The sage green paint has worn back naturally to the wood in places, with the kind of surface that makes an object feel collected rather than decorated. Today, I would use it decoratively on a study shelf, kitchen counter, console or library table.
