Antique French Preserve Jar | Hand Blown Olive Green Glass | Late 18th
What caught my attention about this antique French cornichon jar (bocal) was the glass itself. Sure, it has a beautiful shape, it's aged to perfection but it's the color. This really old feeling olive-green glass has a depth that is difficult to describe until you have it in your hands. Hold it near a window and it shifts from deep forest green to warm amber-green at the edges. This is due to the natural minerals present in the sand that was used by French glassmakers centuries ago.
This hand-blown green glass preserve jar likely dates to the late 18th or early 19th century, when utility glass was made to be used in daily life. Often, the preserves would go into the jar and be covered by thick cloth that was bound around the neck with twine. This would keep out all the unsavory things and allow for the natural fermentation to take place. Otherwise, it was used to hold cornichon (small pickles).
It has a mouth that is slightly out of round, the rolled rim a touch uneven where it was finished by hand. Tiny bubbles drift through the glass, accompanied by faint striations left behind by the blowing process. None of these are flaws. They are exactly what collectors hope to find because they tell you the piece was shaped by a skilled craftsman rather than pressed in a mold. Remarkably, after roughly two centuries, it remains free of chips and cracks.
Toss in a few stems from the garden, a collection of ceramic escargot shells, or a collection of white stones picked up along the shoreline. What began life storing cornichons, preserves, or pantry staples now works in so many ways in the modern home.
