Antique French Bottle Dryer | Galvanized Zinc | Circa 1900
What makes this antique French bottle dryer very interesting is its size. Most surviving égouttoirs à bouteilles (bottle drying racks) were built for commercial cellars and wineries, often standing far taller with six, eight, or even twelve tiers of pegs.
This one is different. It is a compact, four-tiered unit. This makes it surprisingly easy to live with, and it is the rare example that can actually move from a French cellar into a modern home without overwhelming the room.
The construction is hand-worked galvanized iron designed for damp cellar conditions. It has riveted joints that secure the curved uprights to the circular bands. Dozens of forged pegs project outward at every level, each designed to hold a freshly washed bottle upside down by its neck. The tapered profile gives the rack a sense of balance, wider at the bottom and narrowing toward the top.
Decades of use have left the zinc surface with a soft matte grey finish and the chalky weathering that only comes from years spent in a working environment.
I think pieces like this are at their best when they are given a second life. Originally it would have stood among wine bottles drying after cleaning. Today it works just as well holding espresso cups, small mugs, stemware, or just set in the garden to set the tone outside. This is a very cool little eggouttoir à bouteilles!
