Antique French Petanque Balls (Boules Cloutées) | Set of Five | Early 20th C.
All five of these antique French boules cloutées (old petanque balls) still carry their original owner's marks. You can see them on each ball in copper or brass against the darker iron nails. The brass initials are what make this set interesting because on a busy village petanque court, surrounded by players using nearly identical boules, everyone needed a way to recognize their own. More than a century later, those little brass letters are still doing their job.
These are the real predecessors of the modern pétanque ball. Each began as a turned boxwood sphere before a clouteur (nailer) painstakingly drove hundreds of hand-forged nails into the surface until the wood disappeared beneath a protective shell of iron. It was skilled work, and no two sets ever came out exactly alike.
This group likely dates to the early 20th century, around 1900 to 1920, consistent with the round-head nail construction of the period. Decades of handling have softened the surface and polished the brass owner marks, while the iron has developed the deep patina collectors love.
What I enjoy about old boules cloutées is that they carry traces of the people who played with them. The initials, the wear patterns, the slight differences from one ball to the next. These are not anonymous pieces of history. They belonged to someone. Today they look handsome placed in a wooden bowl, displayed on a shelf, or incorporated into a collection of French country antiques.
