Empire Palmette Brass Candlestick | Antique French Bougeoir
Empire Palmette Brass Candlestick | Antique French Bougeoir
This Empire brass candlestick has a quiet formality that feels very French. The tapered column, rounded foot and crisp palmette bands give it structure and elegance, while the warm brass keeps it easy to place on a mantel, writing desk, console or dining table.
Known in French as a bougeoir en laiton, this antique brass candlestick likely dates from the early 19th century, around 1810 to 1830. The design carries the Empire and Restauration taste beautifully, with a fluted candle cup, gadrooned collars and stamped palmette ornament circling both the neck and the foot.
The underside shows raw sand-cast metal and old dark oxidation, a lovely sign of period manufacture rather than a smooth modern copy. The polished brass surface has softened with age, giving the piece a warm golden tone with gentle wear from two centuries of use.
Used with a single taper, it adds height, light and history without needing a matching pair. It is the kind of small antique French candlestick that brings refinement to a room in a quiet, confident way.
