Antique French Brass Jam Pan | Bassine à Confiture | Early 19th Century
This antique French jam pan was glinting in the sunlight across the brocante, just begging for attention. And here we are! Most preserving pans from this era are copper (cuivre). Brass examples like this are far less common, and they have a completely different presence. The color is softer, almost honey-like... particularly after nearly two centuries of use.
Known in France as a bassine à confiture (jam pan), this was the pot that appeared each summer when fruit was ripe and preserving season began. The hand-crafted body and forged iron handle place it comfortably in the early to mid-19th century.
The wide body was designed to encourage evaporation, helping fruit cook down efficiently into jams and other preserves. Underneath, you can see the hammer marks... small reminders of the craftsman who shaped it. The forged iron swing handle is attached through substantial mounting plates, secured with a rivets. It was made to spend long days over heat, year after year, and the soft wear across the brass surface reflects that history.
Just imagine the generations of summers this pan has experienced... kids gathering apricots, cherries, figs, blackberries and piling them high on the farmhouse table. This hand crafted jam pot hanging over the fire, gently reducing everything into delicious jellies and jams.
Today it looks equally at home filled with fruit on a kitchen island, filled with white or blue rolled dinner napkins, or sitting next to the fireplace filled with kindling. The craftsmanship is impressive and the color is even better.
