Antique French Colander | Green Glazed Terracotta | Late 18th Century
Pieces like this are a good reminder that pottery was once made one at a time. This antique French passoire (colander) was thrown by hand, pierced by hand, glazed by hand, and used for generations. Likely dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, it comes from the folk pottery tradition of southern France. Today, the green glazed terracotta colander is simply amazing.
The body is thick terracotta with three small feet and matching lug handles at the rim. It is a substantial piece of pottery. The deep green terre vernissée (lead glaze) has worn beautifully over time, revealing the warm clay tones throughout.
When you look closely, you see that the handwork is everywhere. The drainage holes wander slightly with some pierced more deeply than others. As it was being cleaned, it was noted that a few of the holes to not quite break through the wall at all. Nothing about it is perfectly regular, which is exactly what makes it so appealing.
This antique French colander quietly steals all the attention once it finds a place in a kitchen. Most people have never seen anything quite like this before. It looks delightful filled with lemons, oranges or a fresh batch of whole walnuts. It brings texture, history, and a wonderful glow with it.
We believe that this can still be used for cleaning and draining fruits, but with the age we do no recommend using hot water as the thermal shock may damage the or crack the piece.
