Antique French Copper Basins | Nesting Pair | Late 19th C.
This pair of antique French copper basins caught my attention because they are a matched pair. This is unusual and most likely come from a a small production home canning operation.
They have that warm, lived-in copper color that immediately brings a French kitchen to mind. Not polished to perfection. Not stripped of their age. Just beautiful old copper softened by time.
The two basins nest together beautifully, which makes the pair especially appealing.
Each one has a rounded copper body with a rolled rim and side handles in brass. The larger basin has a wider, lower form, while the smaller one sits comfortably inside it, giving the set a natural sense of proportion.
The surfaces show the age in a way I really like. The copper has deepened into warm tones, with darker areas, surface wear and signs of years of use.
Today, they would be beautiful used together or separately. Individually, they could hold fruit, linens, market vegetables, pinecones, or seasonal greenery. Together, they layer beautifully into a copper collection, where the different sizes and brass handles give the pair that relaxed "collected" feeling.
There is something very French about copper pieces like this. They were made to work, but they still bring warmth and atmosphere into a room. This nesting pair has that balance of usefulness and beauty that makes old kitchen copper so easy to live with.
