Antique French Copper Cauldron | Unique Repairs | 17th to 18th Century
This antique French copper cauldron is really unique. it has a repair like I've never seen before that looks almost like a miniature door. It's really amazing. You can see that the copper is deeply worked, patched and riveted. Somebody really loved this little copper cauldron enough to get it repaired several times.
This chaudron en cuivre (copper cauldron) likely dates from the 17th or 18th century, consistent with the hand made nature, early brass mounts, forged iron bail and old working repairs. Pieces like this were used in French farmhouse kitchens for cooking over an open hearth, long before modern cookware or standardized production.
The repair work is actually incredible. You can see that it went through the copper wall and has been hammered smooth on the inside. Perhaps once there was a handle of some sort in this location? It is difficult to tell and adds to the history of this piece of antique French copper.
The brass handle mounts are fixed with hand-cut copper rivets, an early construction detail that separates this from later production pieces. The forged iron bail still swings cleanly, and verdigris has settled into the seams, rivets and aged repairs. The copper surface catches the light across every dent and hammer mark.
Today, it would be beautiful on a kitchen hearth filled with dried lavender, beside a stone fireplace holding kindling, or displayed where the repairs and handwork can be seen up close. It is still a functioning piece of copper first and a conversation piece second.
