Antique French Poissonniere | Copper Fish Kettle | 19th Century
This antique French poissonnière (fish kettle) reflects the kind of utilitarian copperwork once found hanging near the hearths of most provincial kitchens. Designed for poaching whole fish, the elongated body was created with softly rounded ends and a single forged iron handle.
The visible brass brazed seams at the corners, where the end caps join the long copper panels, are particularly appealing details that point to traditional hand assembled construction dating likely from around 1870 to 1890.
The surface carries decades of beautifully authentic aging. The exterior copper has developed a warm mottled patina with touches of verdigris gathered naturally around the seams and handle attachments.
While the original tin lining (étamage) inside has oxidized into soft grey green tones that only time can produce... it would need retinning to be used for cooking. Every irregularity across the surface speaks to the handmade nature and the long life it once lived in a working kitchen.
Today, this French copper fish poacher brings more decorative warmth than culinary utility, though that history remains part of its charm. Whether styled along the top of a hutch or used as a centerpiece filled with bread or seasonal branches, it adds an unmistakable Provençal atmosphere to a space. This piece is also perfect for succulents or a planter outside.
