Antique French Copper Hanging Buckets | Pair of Cauldrons | 19th Century
This matched pair of antique French copper hanging buckets caught my attention because they stayed together. That is part of the beauty here. One is slightly larger than the other, but they clearly belong side by side. They both have the same hand-hammered copper bodies, the same iron bail handles, and the same quiet farmhouse presence. They feel like pieces that worked in the same kitchen, near the same hearth, for many years.
There is something wonderful about old copper when it has not been polished to perfection. These have the warm glow of age, with darker areas, surface wear, and the kind of uneven patina that makes them feel alive. The hammered surfaces catch the light differently from every angle, and you can still see the marks of the coppersmith's hammer across the surface.
These antique French copper cauldrons likely date from the 19th century, consistent with provincial French copper work of the period. Each bucket has an applied rolled base, giving it a solid presence when placed on a counter, shelf, or table. The hand-forged iron handles are securely attached and there is a ring for hanging. These pots were likely used with a crémaillère (wrought iron chimney hook) over the open fire.
The interiors have a deeper aged patina with areas of copper bloom, while the exteriors carry that softer, warmer copper tone that works so beautifully in a French kitchen. They were made to be used to heat water, for cooking or the many small tasks that old farmhouse kitchens asked of their tools every day.
Today, they would be beautiful used together or separately. Picture them on a kitchen counter in early autumn, one filled with apples from the market and the other holding fresh herbs, a potted plant or even rolled dishtowels for the kitchen.
They would also be wonderful hung from hooks along a stone wall, layered into a copper collection, or used with seasonal greenery. As a pair, they bring that "collected" feeling that makes a room look as though it came together slowly with a real love for curated French items.
