Antique French Copper Jelly Mold | Embossed Pear Motif | 19th Century
This antique French copper jelly mold caught my attention because of the pear motif. It is such a beautiful old kitchen detail... fruit, leaves, copper, and deliciousness all coming together from one small piece. There is something about it that immediately feels connected to a French farmhouse kitchen, where dessert was not just something sweet at the end of a meal, but part of the season.
The raised design shows a pear with leaves and around the lower body it has rounded godrons that give the mold a soft feel. It has enough shine to catch the light on a kitchen wall, but still carries the age and warmth that make antique French copper so easy to love.
This antique French copper jelly mold likely dates from the late 19th century, consistent with regional French copper production of the period. The dome was hand hammered, with the fruit motif worked into the copper in relief. The interior was lined with tin so it could be used for food, and that old tinning has aged to a soft grey patina.
A small iron ring on the back allows the mold to hang easily for display. These old copper molds were made to be useful, but they also became part of the decoration of the kitchen. Home chefs around France grouped them together above a table, near a cupboard, or along a wall of collected copper.
Today, it would be beautiful in a copper collection, hung above a farmhouse table, or placed near a bowl of pears, figs, or late summer fruit. It has that wonderful balance of pastry tradition, handwork, and French country charm.
