Antique French Copper Pitcher | Hammered| Late 18th Century
This antique French copper pichet (pitcher) just feels amazing in the hands. It has that soft, planished (smooth hammered) texture that comes from being worked by hand, with small variations in the copper that catch the light and remind you that a coppersmith shaped this piece one hammer stroke at a time.
This was most likely a small dairy pitcher, used for milk in a farmhouse kitchen. The form is simple and practical. It has a rounded copper body, a modest pouring lip, and a single riveted strap handle. It likely dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, consistent with the construction and materials.
The body appears to have been created and shaped by hand, then planished with a smooth-faced hammer to refine the surface. Along one side, you can see the old dovetailed seam, with brass showing through where the joint was worked and secured. The handle is a thick flat copper band, attached with rivets... these are the details that give the whole piece that amazing feeling of being in an early French kitchen.
Inside, the old tin lining remains in place and has darkened with age and use. Around the base and seams, there are areas of verdigris where time has settled into the copper. The rim has a slight wave to it, and the surface carries the marks of a long working life. These are exactly the details that make a milk jug like this feel so authentic.
Today, it would be beautiful on a sideboard, open shelf, or farmhouse table. The shape is just so beautiful. Fill it with flowers, wooden spoons, or even antique rolling pins. This has aged into a category of beauty over hundreds of years that is difficult to describe.
