Antique French Copper Strainer Pot | Wall Perforated Passette | L. Fraiche Carcassonne
The first detail that draws the eye on this antique French copper strainer pot is the maker’s plaque mounted proudly to the front: L. Fraiche, Constructeur, Carcassonne.
The small brass medallion, stamped with the number 4, gives the piece an unmistakably unique character. Formed as a low cylindrical vessel with hand brazed copper construction, it is reinforced with brass bands at the top and base and fitted with a turned wooden handle secured to a riveted brass plate. Likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, it reflects the practical craftsmanship of provincial French copper ateliers.
The construction is particularly interesting. Unlike a traditional colander or passoire, the base remains solid while the perforations are punched through the upper side wall just beneath the brass rim. Designed to be tipped while pouring, the liquid would pass through the carefully spaced holes while solids remained inside. Pieces like this were often used in dairies, kitchens, or wine cellars throughout regions such as Languedoc, where practical workshop tools were built to endure daily use.
Along the back, the hand formed dovetail seam remains clearly visible, showcasing the skill of the original coppersmith. Inside, the worn tin lining (étamage) bears the soft marks of long use, while the brass bands and wooden handle have aged to a beautifully mellow patina.
Whether displayed among a collection of antique copper or incorporated into a kitchen that values authentic kitchenware from a bygone age... this unusual French copper passette brings both history and sculptural presence to a space.
