Antique French Copper Preserving Pot | Solid Copper Handle | 18th Century
The detail that makes this antique French copper preserving pot different is the handle. It is solid copper, not iron or brass, which gives the whole piece this amazingly warm feeling. Finding a pan with a handle made entirely in copper is extraordinarily unique and gives this piece a quiet distinction immediately.
This antique French copper pot likely dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, consistent with the hand-forged rivets, large irregular hammer marks, and pre-industrial construction. The form is simple and practical: it has straight sides rising from a flat base. The feeling is nice... like it has been made carefully by someone who knew exactly what what they were doing.
The solid copper handle is attached through a reinforced copper strap and secured with four hand-forged rivets. The irregularity of the rivets give it a lot of character. Inside, the old tinned lining remains in place, with darkening, verdigris, and signs of long use from what may be two centuries of working life in a French kitchen.
The surface is not perfect, and that is part of the beauty. The hammer marks, aged tinning and the all-copper handle just work together to give this small pot a presence far beyond its size.
Today, it would be beautiful hanging from a kitchen rail, sitting on an open shelf, or placed on a stove where the copper can catch the light. It has aged into the kind of beauty that speaks for itself.
