Antique French Copper Strainer Set | Set of Three Colanders | Brass Handles
This set of three antique French copper strainers (passoires) has that satisfying feeling of a complete set that survived several generations. Each passoire has the same warm copper bowl, brass handle and pierced rosette pattern. The graduated sizes allow for easy nesting into one another. They feel like the kind of pieces that would have hung from a peg rail in a French kitchen... always close at hand.
There is something beautiful about how practical they are, but also how decorative they feel. The perforations are arranged in small clustered rosettes, giving each colander a soft yet refined look. The bowls are hand-shaped copper with a rolled rim and a single banded ridge near the top. The flat brass handles are riveted securely to the bowls and finished with hanging holes at the end.
These antique French passoires likely date from the early 20th century, around 1900 to 1920, consistent with regional French copperwork from the period. The copper has been polished to a warm glow, with enough age and surface variation left behind to keep the pieces feeling true to the time period. The brass handles have their own mellow patina, which works beautifully against the copper.
Today, they would be beautiful hanging together above a stove or near a stone sink where the light can catch the copper during the day. They could also be nested together on an open shelf or displayed with other French copper pieces for that collected kitchen feeling.
Three sizes and just enough decorative detail to make them feel more than purely functional. They still carry the usefulness of old kitchen tools, but they have aged into something warm, charming, and very easy to live with.
