French Hand-Raised Copper Water Jug | Antique Double-Spout Broc
This French copper water jug has the kind of form that makes people stop before they know what they are looking at. The rounded hand-hammered body, tall arched handle and two opposing pouring spouts give it a sculptural balance that feels both practical and quietly extraordinary.
Known as a broc à eau, or water jug, this piece likely dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It was hand raised by a country coppersmith with a dovetailed and brazed footed base, flat hand-made rivets and the kind of surface only generations of handling can create.
The old repairs are part of the story. The rim and base were resealed over time with lead and tin solder, keeping the jug in service rather than letting it disappear. Today, I would use it decoratively with dried branches, tall utensils, flowers in a liner or simply standing on its own where the copper can catch the light.
It has weight, age and a beautiful sense of purpose. This is not decorative copper pretending to have history. It has the history built into every seam, patch and hammer mark.
