Antique French Copper Water Jug | Iron Handles | Hand-Hammered Broc à Eau
This antique French copper water jug has the kind of shape that feels almost architectural. It is tall and narrow through the neck, grounded by a wide bell foot. With the hand forged iron handle, the whole piece has an almost commanding presence. You can feel the craftsmanship immediately. It was made to carry water, but today it feels almost like sculpture.
This broc à eau (water jug) likely dates from the 18th to 19th century, consistent with the hand-hammered copper, dovetailed seam and forged iron fittings. Before indoor plumbing, pieces like this were part of daily life in provincial French kitchens. They were used to carrying water between the well, the kitchen, the table and wherever the household needed it.
The body is made from hand-hammered copper, joined along a dovetailed seam and finished with an iron strap that passes over the rim to the spout. It is an amazing detail. A small ring of stamped rosettes circles the shoulder, a simple decorative detail that feels very much like the hand of the coppersmith.
There is a hairline crack on the underside, so this piece is decorative only and cannot hold water.
Today, it would be beautiful on a stone mantel, kitchen console or open shelf with dried lavender or olive branches. It brings the feeling of old southern France into a room without needing to be perfect: hand made, well used and very handsome.
