Antique French Cornichon Jar | Hand Blown Green Glass | Late 18th Century
This antique French cornichon jar is all about the glass. The green feels soft, old and alive when the light moves through it. The surface has that kind of uneven clarity that only comes from early hand-blown glass. It was made for storage in a French pantry, but today it has that wonderful ability to settle into a room just by sitting near a window.
This bocal à cornichons, or pickle jar, likely dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. Jars like this were workhorses in French country kitchens, used for storing cornichons, pickled vegetables, truffles and whatever the season brought in to preserve. The green tint comes naturally from iron in the sand, rather than from an added colorant.
The jar is generously sized compared to other examples like this one. The rim sits slightly off true, which is exactly the kind of irregularity you want to see in glass of this age. It weighs just over two and a half kilos, so it has real substance in the hand.
Look closely and you can see small bubbles suspended in the glass, soft ripples in the wall and a pontil mark on the underside where the glassblower’s rod was broken away. These details are all a part of how the jar was made, before glass making became standardized.
Today, it would be beautiful on a kitchen counter with fresh flowers from the farmers market or simple branches any time of the year. Set beside a sunlit window, the green glass brings color, light and a wow-factor into any room. It still carries the feeling of the French country pantry direct from Provence into your home.
