Antique French Cornichon Jar | Hand Blown Green Glass | Late 18th Cen.
This antique French cornichon jar has the kind of green glass that feels alive the moment light passes through it. The color is soft but rich, with that beautiful old-world tint you see in early hand blown glass. It was made for the pantry, but today it has the presence of something much more decorative.
This bocal à cornichons, or pickle jar, likely dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. Jars like this were workhorses of the French country pantry, used for storing cornichons, fruits, preserves, truffles, and whatever needed to be kept through the colder months. The green tint comes naturally from iron in the sand, rather than from an added colorant.
The jar is hand-blown and generously sized with an uneven lip that gives it character and charm. You can see bubbles, ripples, and small inclusions throughout the glass, and a clear pontil mark on the underside.
What I love about old French glass like this is how easily it settles into modern life. Set it on a kitchen counter with some fresh flowers from the farmers market, fill it partially with glass beads or place it beside a window where the afternoon light can move through the green glass. It would also be beautiful with simple branches anytime of the year.
There is something especially appealing about this preserving jar whose beginnings were purely utilitarian... but now has aged into this kind of quiet beauty. It still carries the feeling of the French country pantry, but now it brings all that color, light and history into the room.
