Antique French Cruche | Green Glazed Earthenware | Devotional Medallion
This antique French cruche has a detail that makes it feel very personal: an applied religious medallion pressed into the front of the body. The small devotional figure sits within an arched niche, surrounded by a beaded border. It appears to represent the Virgin Mary or a saint, but either way, it gives the jug a quiet devotional quality that feels different from a purely utilitarian water vessel.
This green glazed earthenware cruche likely dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. It was hand thrown, likely in southwestern France or within the Pyrenean pottery tradition. In this region, domestic pottery often carried both practical and symbolic meaning.
The exterior is covered in a vibrant copper-green glaze, which is especially striking against the warm terracotta showing through at the base. Many regional cruches were only partially glazed, especially when the lower portion was meant to be less visible or used for storage purposes. A fully glazed example like this feels more considered, made to be kept, seen and appreciated in the home.
You can still see the throwing rings around the body, where the potter pulled the clay by hand. The surface shows age and use, including wear at the base from resting on hard surfaces over many decades.
Today, it would be beautiful on a kitchen shelf, a bedroom dresser, console or side table/ It can be filled with fresh market flowers or left empty... it is beautiful either way. The green glaze brings color and warmth, while the medallion gives the piece a quieter, more intimate feeling.
