This cul noir French faience charger has a beautifully restrained presence. The pale celadon face, dark manganese underside and small floral basket at the center give it an unusual balance: soft from the front, dramatic when seen from the side.
Cul noir means black bottom, referring to the deep manganese glaze on the reverse. This antique French faience piece likely dates from the 19th century and carries a shaped rim, fine border detail and a central floral basket decoration on a softly aged glaze.
The surface shows deep crazing, rim wear and small areas where the terracotta body appears through the glaze, all part of its long life. Displayed on a sideboard, plate stand or wall, it adds quiet color, age and depth without needing to be loud. It is the kind of piece that makes a room feel more collected the moment it arrives.
