Antique French Cutting Board | Elm with Rope Handle | Mid 19th Century
This antique French cutting board has the kind of grain that makes you stop and look closer. The elm has swirls across the face of the cutting board. Those dark burl knots add a soft movement and the warm color. It feels rustic and strangely sophisticated in the same moment. There is a lot happening in the wood, and that is what gives this board so much personality.
This planche à découper ancienne (old cutting board) likely dates from the late 19th century. It was carved from a single slab of elm, with a wide working surface that narrows into a longer than average handle. The handle has been drilled and fitted with a twisted hemp loop (a more recent addition), allowing the board to hang from a wall or kitchen hook.
The handmade nature is visible in all the right places. The handle is faceted rather than turned, shaped by eye with simple tools. Along the underside, you can still see long scalloped marks from the drawknife, which gives the piece a wonderfully direct connection to the person who made it.
The surface shows knife scoring from use, along with stable drying cracks running with the grain. These are the marks of a board that was part of daily kitchen life for generations. It has the kind of worn-in surface that feels good to be around.
Today, it would be beautiful hung from the hemp loop, leaned against a wall where the elm grain can catch the light, or used on the counter for whatever prep work the meal calls for. It has that true French farmhouse feeling: one piece of wood, shaped by hand, used for generations and still full of purpose.
