Antique French Cutting Board | Fan Handle Shape | Late 19th Century
The handle is what got me on this antique French cutting board. It's fan-shaped and almost architectural feeling. From there, it has a pair of inward-curving shoulders that give the whole board a shape that is really unique. Most old French cutting boards are straightforward rectangles with a simple paddle handle. This one feels like someone cared about how it looked as much as how it worked. Likely late 19th to early 20th century and cut from beech, the traditional hardwood of French kitchens.
The surface tells the rest of the story. Decades of knife marks crisscross the board from edge to edge, worn smooth by time and use. There is a faint green staining near the center, likely the trace of countless vegetables prepared on the same spot over generations.
One corner has an old repair where the nail hole shows where the section of missing wood was held in place. When this was lost is unknown, but the patina indicates that it happened long ago and has simply became part of the board. At the top, a drilled hanging hole reminds you that this board spent most of its life within easy reach of the cook.
This is the kind of board that takes a antique French cutting board collection from good to great. Lean it against the backsplash with your other boards, hang it on the wall, or use it exactly as intended: for bread, cheese, and whatever comes home from the market. It's the shape pulls you in first, but the feel that closes the deal. A really wonderful piece of French farmhouse life.
