Antique French Cutting Board | Hand Carved Chestnut | Tapered Handle
This antique French cutting board has the kind of shape that is unusual and feels ancient. The wide cutting surface rises into a long tapered handle, all carved from one continuous piece of wood. There is no joinery, no extra construction, nothing added to make it more complicated than it needed to be. Just a cutting board shaped by hand and used for generations.
This planche à découper ancienne (old cutting board) likely dates from around 1880 to 1920. The wood appears to be chestnut or walnut, both commonly used in French country kitchens during the period. The handle narrows into a rounded grip with a drilled hole at the top, and old twine remains wrapped around the neck where the handle tapers.
That twine is a detail I really like. It looks as though someone added it long ago to either hang it from a wall or keep it handy. The same would apply for use in any home today.
The cutting face shows knife marks from years of bread, cheese, charcuterie, vegetables and everyday kitchen work. The surface has darkened and softened with use, giving the board a delightful patina.
Today, it would be beautiful on a stone counter with a baguette and a wedge of Cantal, hung with other antique French cutting boards on the wall. This board is ready for use immediately once it arrives... and it is bringing that feeling of a real French farmhouse with it.
