Antique French Cutting Board | Hand Carved Diamond Handle | Circa 1850
The shape is what caught my eye on this antique French cutting board. This very old cutting board is beautifully worn, with a hand-shaped diamond handle that feels more like the work of a farmer than a cabinetmaker. Dating to around the mid 19th century, this old planche à découper (cutting board) spent generations doing exactly what it was made to do before retiring from kitchen duty.
The age is all there in the wood. Deep grain separation, old drying cracks, softened edges, and a cutting surface marked by decades of knife work. Look closely and you can still see the drawknife shaping along the sides where the board was finished by hand rather than machine. A few small worm holes near one corner speak to its long life, while the substantial thickness and weight give it real presence. At nearly four kilos, this French cutting board did not shy away from the hard kitchen work it was made for.
This is the kind of board that works just as well today as it did 150 years ago. Lean it against a backsplash beside old copper, use it for bread and cheese when friends come over, or hang it from its original twine where the shape can be appreciated. The wear is exactly what you hope to find on a board of this age.
This listing shows evidence of historic woodworm activity consistent with age and provenance. The piece has been treated and is structurally sound. As with all antique wood, periodic preventative care may be considered over time. Decorative use recommended.
