Antique French Cutting Board | Hand Carved Slab | Early 19th Century
The first thing you notice about this antique French cutting board is the repair. Actually, repairs. This old planche à découper (cutting board) spent so long in service that it was fixed more than once rather than discarded, which tells you almost everything you need to know about the kitchen where it lived. Hand cut from a single slab of hardwood in the early to mid 19th century, it was built for work and clearly got plenty of it.
The board is wonderfully substantial at nearly 4 kg and a full 5 cm thick. The handle is carved from the same piece of wood, with beveled edges and the slight asymmetry that comes from hand crafting rather than machinery. The surface is dense with knife marks layered over generations of use. A long split runs through the body, first repaired with hand-forged nails, the dark traces of those repairs still visible today. Later, likely sometime in the mid 20th century, the board was reinforced again with threaded rods and hex nuts countersunk into the wood. Three chapters of the same story, all still visible on the surface.
This is the kind of board that feels more like a piece of French farmhouse history than a kitchen accessory. Lean it against a backsplash beside old copper, use it for bread and cheese, or simply hang it from the wall with some old twine. The repairs are not flaws here. They are the reason the piece survived. And honestly, they are the best part.
