Antique French Cutting Board | Hand-Finished Hardwood | Early 20th Century
This antique French cutting board has the kind of surface that tells you it was part of daily life. The wood is darkened and worn in. It has a simple rectangular body and short rounded handle that feel very practical. It has that look of a cutting board that stayed on the work surface, ready for whatever the kitchen needed next.
This planche à découper ancienne (old cutting board) likely dates from around 1910 to 1930. It was cut from a single thick slab of hardwood. The grain is tight and straight, and the it is substantial. It is closer to a small chopping block than a bread board.
The hand finishing is part of the charm. One shoulder is cut slightly deeper than the other, and the handle runs a little off true. Those small irregularities are exactly what make old French kitchen boards feel personal. You can see where someone shaped it by hand and someone else repaired it at some point with flush mount pieces of iron (unsure if they are nails) in the side. No apparent damage can be seen on the board itself.
The surface has darkened through years of handling, washing and cutting. There are scratches, small indents, worn edges and the kind of patina that only comes from age. It is a board that did its job quietly for decades, meal after meal, without ever needing to be anything more than useful.
Today, it would be beautiful on a long table after lunch with an assortment of cheeses, decorative cheese knives and a bottle of rosé close at hand. Or, add it to a collection of cutting boards on the wall. The sheer size is a statement in itself.
