Antique French Cutting Board | Joined Oak or Chestnut | 1920s Farmhouse Board
This antique French cutting board has unique detail that tells a really interesting story. It was made from two pieces of wood joined together, with a finger joint running down the center. you can see where the two pieces of wood have been bonded, but in a more rustic manner than is done in modern manufacturing.
This small joint detail says a lot about rural French workshops in the early 20th century. At this point, the wider "old-growth" boards were becoming harder to come by and makers used what they had. It was around this time period that this type of joinery was perfected with real skill.
This planche à découper ancienne (old cutting board) likely dates from the 1920s to 1930s. It is likely made from oak or chestnut, with one side showing a wavy flame grain and the other a tighter, straighter grain. This board looks great in a French country kitchen.
Both faces are scored with knife marks, which tells you the board was used on both sides for decades. The patina has aged naturally into a lovely soft silvery brown. It has that worn-in feeling that only comes from repeated use, washing, handling and time.
Today, it would be beautiful leaning against a kitchen wall with other antique French cutting boards or set out for a wedge of cheese, saucisson and some fresh baguette. It brings a quiet bit of old French farmhouse feeling into any room.
