Antique French Cutting Board | Primitive Farmhouse | Circa 1880s
This antique French cutting board has the kind of surface that only comes from a real working farmhouse kitchen. The wood is thick, heavy and deeply marked from decades of use. You can see where knives hit the same places again and again, slowly softening the center of the board and turning a practical kitchen tool into something full of character.
This planche à découper ancienne (old cutting board) likely dates from the late 19th century, around the 1880s. It was hewn from a single thick slab of hardwood, with a long handle that looks hand cut. The handle tapers and is forked at the tip which is a unique shape.
The sheer size is a big part of what makes this French cutting board so special. At over five centimeters thick and weighing more than five kilos, it is a board that was built to work hard and survive the test of time. The surface has aged into a deep amber tone, with knife marks, worn edges, old staining and the kind of patina that feels just so right.
There are old woodworm holes visible in the board, consistent with age and long life in a French farmhouse setting. We see no active woodworm activity (the board has been treated as a preventative and is structurally sound), but as with all antique wood pieces, it should be kept in a dry interior environment and monitored over time.
Today, it would be beautiful leaned against the backsplash of a stone farmhouse kitchen, hung on the wall with other antique French cutting boards or used as a "serving board" for charcuterie, cheese, figs and a torn baguette.
