Antique French Cutting Board | Solid Oak | Sink-Fit Circa 1900
The details are what make this antique French cutting board interesting. At first glance it looks like a simple French planche à découper (cutting board), but then you notice the angled handles and the small hole near the edge. Neither is accidental. The handles were cut on a bias so the board could sit securely across a round stone sink, while the hole was made to hold a fusil (sharpening steel) within easy reach of the cook. It is a wonderfully practical piece of kitchen design, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
Cut from a single slab of wood, the board has all the right indicators for a well preserved cutting board. The working face is covered in generations of knife marks, layered one over another until they have become part of the surface itself. The grain is tight and straight, with the characteristic flecks of French oak still visible beneath the patina. The reverse side is much smoother, carrying only the small hole for the sharpening steel near the corner. Everything about it feels purposeful.
You can almost picture where it lived. Resting across the rim of a granite sink, sharpening steel standing ready in its little socket, onions and garlic waiting on the counter. Pieces like this remind you that the best kitchen tools were often shaped by the people who used them every day. Functional, thoughtful, and built to last. Exactly the kind of object I love finding.
