Antique French Cutting Board | Solid Plank with Tongue Handle | Circa 1900
This antique French cutting board has the kind of weight and presence that feels so good. It was cut from one solid plank with a squared tongue handle carved straight out of the same piece of wood. Just one thick board, shaped for work and used in a French kitchen for more than a century.
This planche à découper ancienne (old cutting board) likely dates from around 1900. It was made from close-grained hardwood, likely beech, with a substantial rectangular cutting surface. This board has a small drilled hole, through the side of the handle, for hanging. It's unique that it is through the side.
The cutting board is simple, practical and exactly the kind of board you expect to find in a country kitchen from the turn of the last century.
At over four centimeters thick and almost two kilos, it has enough weight to sit firmly on a counter while being used. The surface shows darkening, knife scoring and the kind of wear that comes from decades of everyday preparation.
Today, it could sit on the counter with a loaf of country bread, a knife and a small bowl of olives... or hang with other antique French cutting boards where the different woods, handles and shapes build that collected farmhouse feeling. It has the substance of a true working board and is ready to be useful again.
