Antique French Cul Noir Faience Platters | Rouen-Style Pair, c. 1750–1780
The magic here is that this pair of almost identical cul noir platters has stayed together for over 200 years. This pair of antique French cul noir platters has the soft blue painting, shaped edges and deep manganese backs that is so traditional and delightful all at once. This pair has the feeling of pieces that have lived with families for generations.
These plat banettes, or shaped oval serving dishes, likely date from around 1750 to 1780 and are consistent with the Rouen faience tradition. Each is tin-glazed earthenware, painted by hand with a blue flower basket at the center and a fine trellis border around the lobed rim.
The backs carry the dark reddish-brown glaze associated with cul noir, meaning black bottom. The glazing show fine crazing, edge wear and warm age. Both platters come with hanging hardware already attached from a previous owner.
Hung together on a wall or displayed on a sideboard, they bring real 18th century French country beauty into the room.
