This Jules Vieillard Bordeaux faience service has the kind of blue-and-white presence that makes a table feel instantly more collected. The pieces feel refined without being delicate, with scrolling Bérain-style decoration, classical figures and that wonderful old faience surface that only time can give.
Made by Jules Vieillard et Cie in Bordeaux, this antique French service carries the Moustiers pattern mark on the reverse. The decor is painted in blue camaïeu, with central figures, seated busts, arabesques and lambrequin borders inspired by the French goût de Bérain.
The group includes a large oval platter, a deep round dish, a shallow round bowl and a footed compotier. The white ground shows crazing, staining and age from more than a century of use, giving the service its honest period character. The compotier has a visible structural crack and is best enjoyed as a display piece.
Used together on a sideboard, layered into a blue-and-white wall grouping or brought out as part of a larger collected table, these pieces add history, rhythm and quiet elegance.
