Serving platters are the pieces that make a table feel generous. This pair from Clairefontaine has that wonderful blue-and-white presence, with matching Louis XV decoration and enough scale to feel important without becoming formal.
Made by the Faïencerie de Clairefontaine during the Léon Graves period, these antique French terre de fer platters date from around 1894 to 1913. Each carries the Louis XV pattern, with a blue transfer scene of a straw beehive, wheat sheaf, flowering branches and rocaille scrollwork on a warm cream ground.
The reverse of each platter is marked Terre de Fer, Clairefontaine, with the sea anchor used by the factory. The surfaces show age and table wear consistent with more than a century of use, while the blue decoration remains crisp and easy to live with.
Used together on a sideboard, layered into a larger Clairefontaine service or brought to the table for fruit, bread or a large family meal, they add rhythm and history immediately. Dinner plates survive more often than matching serving pieces, which makes this pair especially good.
