Antique French Fenal Frères Pichet | Pexonne Oiseaux Pattern, c. 1890–1910
The mark makes this antique French pichet especially satisfying. The base reads OISEAUX F.F. PEXONNE, tying the pitcher to Fenal Frères at Pexonne in Lorraine. Add the blue bird-and-floral transferware, warm age to the glaze and that wonderful branch-style handle... and the whole piece feels full of French antique wonder.
This pichet, or pitcher, likely dates from around 1890 to 1910. The Oiseaux pattern wraps the body with a partridge in tall grasses, peony flowers, foliage and a small landscape cartouche. The beaded rim and molded handle details give it more personality than a standard everyday jug.
The glaze shows fine crazing, warm toning around the rim and spout and small marks from long use. Display it with white ironstone, use it for flowers or let it stand on a shelf where the blue decoration and Pexonne mark can be enjoyed. This is one of my favorite pitchers.
