Antique French Fruit Strainer | Glazed Earthenware Égouttoir | 19th Century
Some pieces make a kitchen feel warmer just by having them around. This antique French fruit strainer provides that feeling. You can imagine it on the counter after the market, filled with rinsed apricots, cherries, strawberries or fresh greens... the warm yellow color catches the light while the speckled jaspe underside brings in that wonderful southern French pottery style. Now, let's make that dream a reality!
This égouttoir (fruit strainer or drainer) likely dates from the 19th century and is consistent with regional terre vernissée, or glazed earthenware, from southern France. Pieces like this were used in farmhouse kitchens for rinsing and draining soft fruit, vegetables and fresh cheese. It is a purpose crafted kitchen object with humble origins, but the color and handwork make it feel really special.
The shallow bowl has a yellow glaze covering the pierced small drainage holes, spaced by hand so they do not sit perfectly alike. Three little feet lift the dish just enough for air and water to pass underneath.
The glaze shows dense crazing, and the rim has wear back to the bare clay from generations of use. The amount of produce washed in this little antique ceramic strainer is most likely astounding. And it is still going strong, ready for it's next home.
Today, it can still be used for draining fruit, berries, vegetables or fresh greens. It would also be beautiful left on the counter with peaches, oranges, walnuts or green apples. Due to the age, I would avoid hot liquid, as thermal shock may crack the pottery.
