This antique French gargoulette has exactly the kind of presence that makes old Provençal pottery so easy to have in any room. The rounded body, narrow side spout and vivid green glaze give it a strong regional character. It is a humble country water jug, but one with real charm.
Likely made in Provence in the late 19th century, this glazed terracotta water jug was built for practical service at table. The side handle sits comfortably for pouring, and the spout is the defining feature of the form. The glossy green glaze breaks beautifully over the curves, with craquelure and small tonal shifts that only come with time. The upper rim shows the remains of an earlier arched handle, now lost, which adds another honest layer to the life of the piece.
What makes this old French gargoulette especially appealing is that it still has potential as a working object. The visible wear, the old repairs and the rubbed terracotta around the rim all point to a jug that was kept in use rather than set aside. Styled on a shelf with rosemary, olive branches or simply left on its own... it brings that unmistakable South of France kitchen feeling with it. A piece with this much character does not need much around it.
