Antique French Wall Utensil Holder | Green Glazed Earthenware | Late 19th to Early 20th Century
This antique French wall mounted utensil holder is the kind of pottery that immediately catches your eye across the room. The deep emerald green glaze is what makes the piece really pop, though somehow it becomes softer and quieter once filled with wooden utensils or dried herbs. A wonderfully balanced bit of French country pottery.
Known in France as a porte ustensiles (utensil holder), this hand built earthenware piece was likely produced in southern France in the late 19th to early 20th century. The construction is simple and direct: two cylindrical pockets fused to a rounded backplate with suspension holes at the top for hanging near the stove.
The glaze is fantastic. Rich mottled greens with incredible surface variation and flashes of copper toned iridescence where the light catches it just right. Small and subtle irregularities show this is traditional terre vernissée (glazed earthenware) made entirely by hand. Even the back carries soft streaking from the firing process where the piece rested in the kiln.
This French country wall pocket was made for a real working kitchen. Perfect for wooden spoons beside the stove, dried lavender near a sunny window, or bunches of fresh herbs hanging by the counter. The kind of completely unique piece that quietly changes the feeling of a kitchen once it is there.
